12 Key Considerations for UPS Installation: Ensure Safe and Reliable Power
01 Apr 2026

Proper installation of a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or EPS system is essential for safety, reliability, and long-term performance. Following best practices can prevent operational failures, extend battery life, and protect connected equipment. Here are 12 key points to guide UPS installation.

1. Prepare Input and Output Wiring

  • Pre-install input/output cables to the site, reserving 1–1.5 meters for smooth connection.
  • Ensures fast and clean UPS deployment without last-minute adjustments.

2. Select Correct Cable Diameter

  • Input and output wires must meet national electrical safety standards.
  • For three-phase single-output machines, bypass live and neutral wires should be three times thicker than other phase wires.
  • Reference load current by wire size:

Wire Size Max Load Current
2.5 mm² 8 A × 2.5
6 mm² 7 A × 6
10 mm² 6 A × 10
16 mm² 5 A × 16
25 mm² 5 A × 25
35 mm² 4 A × 35
55 mm² 4 A × 55
75 mm² 3 A × 75

3. Use Proper Wire Types and Protection

  • Use multi-core flexible copper wires for ease of installation.
  • Underground wiring should have metal sheathing to prevent rodent damage, burns, and electromagnetic interference.

4. Isolate UPS Output Circuits

  • UPS output must be separate from ordinary sockets.
  • Label dedicated UPS sockets to prevent accidental connection of high-inductive loads.
  • Strong inductive loads (copiers, laser printers, CT/MRI machines, industrial equipment) require UPS-to-load ratios ≥ 4:1.

5. Ensure Proper Grounding

  • Confirm grounding meets national standards for safety and lightning protection.
  • Install a front-end circuit breaker larger than the UPS input to prevent nuisance trips.
  • Avoid connecting UPS input to leakage protection switches.

6. Balance Three-Phase Loads

  • Distribute loads evenly across three phases.
  • Imbalance increases neutral current and neutral-to-ground voltage, causing unsafe operation or fire hazards.

7. Maintain Optimal Environment

  • Avoid humid, dusty, or poorly ventilated areas.
  • Small UPS units should be elevated to prevent condensation.
  • Medium/large UPS should ideally be in a dedicated computer room.
  • High ambient temperature shortens battery and machine lifespan:
25°C: battery life halves every 10°C increase;  30°C: UPS lifespan halves every 10°C increase

8. Ventilation & Floor Load Safety

  • Maintain at least 30 cm clearance from walls for airflow.
  • For medium/large UPS with batteries, ensure the floor can support the load:

Office buildings ≤ 1,000 kg/m²

Industrial plants ≤ 1,400 kg/m²

  • Use steel plates or additional cabinets to distribute weight if necessary.

9. Lightning Protection

  • Suburban or open-area installations may be vulnerable to lightning strikes.
  • Install high-power lightning protection at the UPS input to protect equipment and connected loads.

10. Initial Inspection Before Installation

  • Open the UPS cabinet to check for loose components: circuit boards, wires, capacitors, fuses, transformers, screws, and modules.
  • Use adequate lighting and ensure all components are secure before powering on.

11. Phase Sequence Verification (Three-Phase UPS)

  • Connect mains U, V, W, N according to phase sequence, then ground.
  • Verify voltage: 220V ±25%, frequency: 50Hz ±1.
  • Turn on mains and automatic bypass; if alarms sound, correct the phase sequence.

12. Battery Pack Connection

  • Connect battery positive/negative to UPS terminals correctly and secure.
  • Terminal voltage should be approximately: number of batteries × 13.5V
  • Open-circuit charging voltage: number of batteries × 13.6–13.8V

Conclusion

Installing a UPS system correctly ensures continuous, reliable power, protects sensitive equipment, and extends battery life. From cable preparation to environmental setup and battery connection, each step matters.
